Start Making a Reader Today

Children in the Columbia River Gorge and Northeast Oregon are becoming more confident readers, thanks to the many hours contributed by our generous and caring volunteers. In 2013-14, SMART served 328 Pre-K through third-grade students in elementary schools and Head Start programs at 14 SMART sites in the cities of Cascade Locks, Grass Valley, Halfway, Hermiston, Hood River, Irrigon, Odell, Parkdale, Stanfield, Pendleton, and The Dalles.

Over the past 20 years, SMART has served more than 161,000 children in Oregon with the help of 108,000 volunteers, and has provided over 2 million books for children to take home and keep. Research shows that children who do not learn to read by third grade are more likely to struggle with reading as adults.
